What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Established in 1885, King & Spalding has grown into “a major worldwide player” that represents half of the Fortune 100, including clients such as 3M, General Motors and Google.
Lawyers from the firm appear 56 times across 18 practice areas in our research.
The firm’s commercial arbitration capability stands out. Seven of its 10 nominees are US-based, a presence unmatched by any other firm in the country. Doak Bishop - “the cardinal of commercial arbitration in Texas” - leads a contingent of five from the Houston office, while Margrete Stevens is one of the most highly rated practitioners in DC and the firm is further recognised with two nominees in Paris. The lateral hire of John Savage in Singapore in late 2010 further broadens and strengthens the firm’s expertise in this area.
The trade and customs practice is also very highly rated with six nominees selected. Joseph Dorn founded the international trade practice group and is one of the most highly respected experts in the field worldwide. Three further nominees join him from DC, as well as two from Geneva.
Philip Weems is co-head of the firm’s global energy practice and one of the most highly regarded individuals worldwide in our oil and gas chapter. Alongside him are four further nominees from Texas, including the “first-class” Kenneth Culotta, and a further presence in London.
Chilton Davis Varner stands out both for her product liability defence work and for her wider commercial litigation practice, and is part of a trio of lawyers selected in each sector. Donald Zimmer appears alongside her in the litigation chapter, and both lawyers also score highly in our life sciences research where King & Spalding lawyers appear four times in total. The firm is also strong in other IP related fields, especially the Atlanta office which is home to a further four outstanding patent experts, and in trademarks where two nominees are selected.
With a further presence across an impressive range of areas and a greater number of lawyers listed in the state of Georgia than any other firm in our research, King & Spalding takes its place among the outstanding firms worldwide.
