What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Management Labour & Employment
Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker LLP provides 35 lawyers for 14 of the following chapters, and, with a world-beating 14 representatives in the labour and employment section, takes our award for law firm of the year in that practice area.
Twelve of the lawyers in the labour and employment chapter are based in the US. Paul Grossman in Los Angeles received the most nominations of any listed practitioner. Grossman, who acts as general counsel for the California Employment Law Council, was described by one source as “a leader of discrimination law”, and his diverse practice also encompasses a strong focus on wage-and-hour class actions, and whistleblower and sexual harassment cases. The “outstanding” Barbara Brown chairs the firm’s Washington, DC, office and was one of the most popular names in our research. Another “stand-out name” is Nancy Abell, chair of the firm’s employment department. The firm also has notable presences in the UK and Japan, with the “terrific” Christopher Walter and the “great” Setsuko Ueno ranking highly.
The franchise and real estate chapters both feature three Paul Hastings lawyers. Clients and competitors “have a lot of respect for Andrew Scott”, who ranks among the leaders in the field for franchise. Michael Lindsey is one of the top lawyers in California and Rick Asbill in Atlanta is hailed as a “real scholar of franchise law”. Co-vice chair of the firm’s real estate department Robert Wertheimer is “highly experienced” in real estate transactions, joint ventures, finance and investments and is joined in New York by Martin Edelman, who is of counsel to the firm. Joel Rothstein is the real estate group’s “leading light” in Beijing.
Dominique Borde chairs Paul Hastings’ Paris and Brussels offices and represents the firm in the commercial litigation section. DC-based Lawrence Barcella and Kirby Behre are also noted for their disputes work and feature prominently in the business crime defence chapter.
The firm’s corporate and financial strength is illustrated by the multiple listings it achieves in the insolvency and restructuring, banking and corporate tax sections, with further listings in the M&A and private funds chapters.
In total, 12 Paul Hastings offices in the US, Europe and Asia are represented in the book, highlighting the firm’s “international calibre” in a variety of disciplines.
