Linklaters LLP - Who's Who Legal 70

What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Law Firm of the Year – Capital Markets

Law Firm of the Year – Belgium

With a total of 137 listings from 20 offices around the world and nominees in 24 of the following chapters, Linklaters LLP reaffirms its reputation as a “global powerhouse” in this year’s research. “Excellently staffed” offices in Brussels and Antwerp make a major contribution to the firm’s overall listings and earn Linklaters our award for Belgian law firm of the year.

Linklaters LLP in Who's Who Legal

With a staggering 25 lawyers listed in the capital markets section, Linklaters once again takes our award for law firm of the year in this discipline. The London office fields seven representatives here, including “securitisation guru” James Rice, who counts Barclays Bank among his recent clients. Derivatives and securities specialists Lachlan Burn and Charles Clark are also among the “very best” in the English capital.

Linklaters’ unrivalled international capability is demonstrated by further listings in Belgium, Portugal, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Russia and Sweden. It also has an impressive presence in Asia. Andrew Malcolm in Hong Kong heads the practice in the region and is a “pre-eminent practitioner”. He is joined by partners in Hong Kong, and others in Japan and China. In Singapore Arun Balasubramanian has provided general advice on securities law matters for clients such as Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs. He is joined by the similarly well respected Dean Lockhart and Kevin Wong.

Linklaters’ corporate and financial prowess extends to the banking and M&A chapters, which feature 12 and 11 of the firm’s lawyers respectively. John Tucker is the global head of the finance and projects group and a former head of the banking practice, and is the firm’s best respected lawyer in this section. Three more London-based lawyers feature alongside nominees from Brussels, Frankfurt, Warsaw and Moscow.

Asia is also a key region for the banking practice and the Tokyo and Hong Kong offices are also represented. David Cheyne is one of the best regarded figures in the London market for M&A work and is joined by Matthew Middleditch, who was variously described as “top-class”, “excellent” and “an outstanding lawyer”. Lawyers from several other European offices also feature, alongside the “outstanding” Scott Campbell in Dubai.

Competition is another strong suit for the firm and 21 of its lawyers rank highly in this chapter. Six lawyers from the Brussels office appear, including “leading light” Gerwin Van Gerven; a “superb name” and a former recipient of our competition lawyer of the year award. Five inclusions from the London office and further listings in Paris, Düsseldorf, Lisbon, Stockholm and Warsaw attest to the quality of the Linklaters’ European competition lawyers. Jeffrey Schmidt in New York and Erik Söderlind in Hong Kong extend the firm’s competition practice in the US and Asia.

The real estate chapter includes 11 Linklaters professionals, including the “great” Simon Clark in London. Clark is an expert in the UK taxation of real estate transactions and investment structuring and has advised UK and non-UK institutions, property companies, developers and occupiers. Fellow Londoners James Knox and Patrick Plant were also recommended, alongside nominees in numerous other European offices.

London’s Stuart Salt is recognised for his “excellent” project finance work and is the most highly regarded of the eight Linklaters lawyers in this section. A further five lawyers appear from the London office as well as Jonathan Inman in Dubai and Wilailuk Okanurak in Bangkok.
