What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Business Crime Defence
Jones Day performs excellently again this year - with 72 listings in 20 offices around the world, the firm leaves a truly global footprint in our international research. Featuring prominently in 18 chapters in this guide, below is a summary of the gleaming industry praise Jones Day receives.
The firm wins our practice area award for its “top-tier expertise” in business crime defence, garnering the most listings from our research in this edition. Brian Sun is a “highly respected trial lawyer” in Los Angeles, recommended for his work involving securities fraud, corporate fraud, internal investigations and criminal antitrust. Brian O’Neill is a “go-to guy” for matters involving bankruptcy, antitrust, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and securities. In San Francisco, former federal prosecutor Martha Boersch is “phenomenally strong across the spectrum of white-collar work” and in New York, Charles Carberry is a “sound choice” for SEC investigations. Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland-based lawyers add to the firm’s ranks in this chapter.
Global Competition Review’s “GCR 100” ranks Jones Day’s competition practice as seventh in the world. Representing the likes of MasterCard, American Airlines and Rio Tinto, 14 partners from this “outstanding team” are included, the largest contingent from the firm in our research. While the majority are based in the US, Jones Day fields significant expertise in Brussels, Shanghai and Paris. In Washington DC, practice leader Phillip Proger is “at the top of his game” and Joe Sims is “very well respected”. Brussels-based Bernard Amory leads the competition team in Europe and is hailed “top-flight” by peers. Amory is also one of the most highly regarded practitioners in our regulatory communications research again this year. High profile matters include representing O2 in the O2/T-Mobile infrastructure sharing and national roaming case.
Eight practitioners are included from our labour and employment findings, an increase on last year’s six. Five are based in the firm’s DC office where Andrew Kramer is “outstanding” and “a real thought leader in the field”. In New York, Willis Goldsmith is “brilliant”.
Our insolvency and restructuring research lists six talented names. The “excellent” Corinne Ball leads the global restructuring practice out of the New York office, handled the firm’s chapter 11 reorganisation of Chrysler and recently acted in the high-profile restructuring of Axcelis Technologies. Kevyn Orr is a “prominent litigator” and “guru” for financial institution regulatory work.
Six names feature for their expertise in the construction field. California-based David Buoncristiani is “one of the best in the industry” and Andrew Ness “an absolute must for inclusion on the list”.
Three names are included in our arbitration chapter where Jingzhou Tao is a “leading name” in Beijing.
With listings in a further 11 practice areas, Jones Day goes from strength to strength in our international research, consistently demonstrating a depth and breadth of legal talent.
