What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
With lawyers from 15 offices appearing in 17 of the following chapters, Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP matches geographical breadth with diverse, high-quality legal services.
Insurance and reinsurance, and oil and gas emerge as the firm’s two strongest suits, eight and seven Dewey lawyers feature in the respective chapters.
The insurance and reinsurance dispute resolution practice leader, John Nonna, is the foremost of Dewey’s three listed insurance lawyers in the New York headquarters. Nonna is well regarded for his disputes work, particularly in reinsurance arbitration where peers praise him as an “excellent innovator”. James Dwyer is the managing partner of the firm’s Chicago office and is known for his work on insurance company sales, reinsurance and coinsurance structures, regulatory issues and transactions. Mark Goodman is also recognised in Chicago and the “brilliant” Dean Hansell ranks highly in Los Angeles, while further listings in Paris and London attest to the firm’s international profile in this discipline.
The oil and gas chapter brings together Dewey lawyers from offices in the US, Europe, the CIS and the Middle East. Sector group chair John Coleman LaMaster represents the London office and is “world renowned” for his work on behalf of numerous international state and private bodies in M&A transactions, divestitures, joint ventures and project developments. The “diverse” and “highly accomplished” Rino Caiazzo represents the Rome office in this chapter and earns further listings in the regulatory communications and competition sections, heading the firm’s Italian practice in the latter discipline. Gavin Watson in Dubai, Jonathan Hines in Moscow and Aset Shyngyssov in Almaty represent Dewey’s Middle East, CIS and central Asia teams, all of which have handled significant matters for China National Petroleum Corporation in the past year. Firm-wide chairman Steven Davis is listed from the New York office and former US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission general counsel Charles Moore completes the firm’s impressive total with a listing in Houston.
Dewey’s corporate and financial capabilities are praised in several of the following chapters. Corporate department co-head Richard Shutran, who counts Morgan Stanley, Entegra, BNP Paribas and Credit Suisse among his recent clients, is a “superb transactional lawyer” according to peers and earns a prominent listing in the project finance and public procurement sections. Morton Pierce joins Shutran in the New York office where he acts as co-head of Dewey’s M&A practice group. Pierce has been involved in such high-profile transactions as Walt Disney’s acquisition of Pixar and AXA’s acquisition of MONY, and is recognised in both the M&A and corporate governance chapters. Also listed in both sections are Palo Alto residents Keith Flaum and Richard Climan. Corporate tax emerges as another strong suit for the firm, with four lawyers, including tax department chair Gordon Warnke, achieving recognition in the corresponding chapter.
Another three Dewey lawyers join Caiazzo in the competition chapter: recent acquisition Roxann Henry in DC and New York’s Jeffrey Kessler and Paul Victor are all considered “first rate” by sources. Victor earns another listing in the trade and customs section, alongside DC’s Alan Wolff.
Listings in a further seven chapters speak to the accomplishments of the firm’s dispute resolution, insolvency, labour and employment, environment, internet and franchise teams.
