Argentina In Brief

Argentina In Brief

In the years following the economic collapse of 2001-02, Argentina recreated itself as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. By 2007 GDP growth had reached an estimated 8.5 per cent; a figure comparable to India's and China's, and well ahead of GDP among its Latin American neighbours.
The Argentine constitution affords foreign direct investment the same treatment as domestic investment, with no sector restrictions and the free remittance of profit and capital abroad - as such import and export profits have flourished in the post-crash years.
This year, by contrast, has seen the country's economy come up against some tough obstacles. The government's decision to impose price controls within the energy industry in the wake of the 2001 collapse has seen a marked drop-off in investor interest, with subsequent fuel shortages and lay-offs within the industrial sector. The country's farming industry has also struggled under an increased tax burden, leading to strike action and further discouragement among investors.
While Argentina's prosperity has been tempered by these developments, the country boasts a rich supply of natural resources (including significant reserves of natural gas and livestock), an attractive communications industry and a rapidly expanding real estate market.
The 20 practice areas featured in our publication demonstrate the strength and breadth of the country's Bar. The following firms stood out for the quality of the services they provide within this promising, sometimes changeable, marketplace.
