Business Crime

Biography: Business Crime

Harry Travers is a partner at leading business crime specialists BCL Burton Copeland, a London-based practice providing nationwide representation in relation to all aspects of business crime, regulation, civil fraud and tax litigation.

Mr Travers has had an involvement in numerous high-profile criminal commercial fraud and corruption cases brought by the Serious Fraud Office since it was established in 1987, including Maxwell, BCCI and, more recently, BAe. He also has extensive experience in multi-jurisdictional investigations involving alleged breaches of international sanctions, and acts in a variety of high-profile civil claims involving allegations of fraud.

One of his particular areas of interest is tax fraud litigation; he is a founder member of the Tax Investigations Practitioners Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales, and is regularly asked to draft the institute's published responses to proposals that HM Revenue and Customs be granted further powers to deal with alleged tax fraud.

Mr Travers' practice also encompasses investigations and criminal litigation concerning potential failures to comply with health and safety regulation (an area of particular importance to major organisations in the UK following the coming into force of the Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act 2007).

Before joining his current firm, Mr Travers specialised in anti-tax avoidance litigation at Berwin Leighton. A graduate of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, he received a BA degree in Jurisprudence in 1985, followed by the Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 1987.

He is also listed as an expert in Chambers UK: a Client's guide to UK Legal profession, The Legal 500, the Tax Directors Handbook 2008 and Legal experts (published by Legalease Ltd).
